Heather Carlson
Acrylic and etching on wood

At night, I lull myself to sleep with colorful images swimming through my mind. I create art for the simple joy, harmony, and tranquility it brings me, and I try to share this joy with others through each piece that I create. Nature inspires me, reminding me of the transience of things. Flowers bud, blossom, and finally fall; in my artwork, I capture these fleeting moments.

I grew up on my family's ranch near the southern border of New Mexico. Impressions of my childhood are rich with images of the desert...ocotillo cactus with its strange silhouette and red blooms and swarms of gold june beetles appearing after the rains. Having moved to Santa Fe, the juniper trees and aspen groves of the high desert contrast with the landscape of my childhood, but the new surroundings feed my inspiration just as strongly.

Since receiving an art degree from Western New Mexico College, Heather has been employed as a professional artist at McGary Studios in Ruidoso and Rainbow Gate Ceramic Studio in Santa Fe. Art continues to be an integral part of her life, even after the birth of her son who sits in her lap as she paints.
