Primitive Images on Handmade Paper

In 1988 I learned the art of papermaking at Colorado State University. Paper can be made from the cellulose fiber of any plant, but I use cotton rags because it has a long, strong fiber. The rags are cut into small pieces and beat in a Hollander (invented in Holland to pulp fiber) for several hours. The pulp is then poured onto a screen over a sink and hand pressed with a sponge to compact the fibers. It is then left on the screen to dry.

The dry sheet is coated with acrylic medium to seal it and then wrinkled to provide texture. Over the years I have developed a unique method of treating the paper with layers of acrylic paint forming a background that looks like rock, leather or bark, the perfect background for my “primitive images”.

My artwork is reminiscent of the ancient cave paintings. While I have traveled extensively photographing pictographs and petroglyphs around the world for inspiration, my designs, use of color and composition come from within. My imagery, full of spirals and handprints, horses and dancers, recall a simpler time when healing, fertility, sustenance and protection came form the gods. Through my images I hope you can feel connected to every culture past and present and to the universal spirit which has infused human existence since the beginning of time.
