Elizabeth S. Mullen
Acrylic

Once you have seen one of Elizabeth's studies of her vision of the color of the southwestern landscape you will understand her connection with the high altitude light, which in itself attracts artists from all locations.

Elizabeth paints with a collection of her ideas about depth and perception. Her use of metallic paint and glazes as well as gold and metallic leaf is masterful. She uses it to create reflections, changes and movements within the painting based on the viewers location in the room and the changes in the prevailing light. This makes her paintings close to three dimensional. It also makes the painting come alive.

In visualizing light she sees instantaneous color changes as the earth moves around the scene. She has captured these changes in "Red Magnolia." The flower has distinct colors and reflection that can only be seen at certain times of day and under certain light conditions. The light source can come from behind or in front of the flower, depending on the viewers point of view, this makes the flower appear to float within the painting.

In her landscapes she likes to draw the viewer into the painting in a very intimate way, as in " The Airing" or to place the viewer from a very high point of view to capture the vastness of the landscape as in "San Cristobal Sunset."

Elizabeth draws her inspiration from the geography, art culture, the incredible light and the altitude of Northern New Mexico. She can be reached at the following phone number and will forward photos of her work at your request. Her work can also be viewed most summer weekends at the SFSA shows or at her studio by appointmen
